How the EU can lead in industry this decade

Maxime Bureau, Chairman of AmCham EU penned an op-ed to Our World that speaks to the need for a comprehensive industrial strategy in the EU. In the article, Mr Bureau outlined the importance of addressing challenges related to the skills gap, climate change and the future of the multilateral trading system. In the piece which can be found here, he also stressed that 'as global competition in manufacturing becomes fiercer, we need European industry to be competitive'.

The op-ed further highlighted that in order to remain competitive, a future European industrial strategy should rely on four key pillars, namely: the digitisation of industry, a cleaner future, a circular approach to raw materials, and a reinforced rules-based trading system.

As the Council of the European Union will discuss industrial policy in the context of the European Green Deal on Thursday, 27 February 2020, this op-ed plugs into a very important moment in these key discussions.

AmCham EU has been an active partner in the discussions on a renewed industrial strategy and will share a letter with all EU permanent representations addressed to the respective ministers of Economic Affairs and Industry ahead of the Competitiveness Council meeting highlighting our key principles when it comes to European industry.

The key principles are:

  • Ensuring that industry and consumers can enjoy the full benefits of the Single Market.

  • Creating the right conditions for a sustainable, climate-neutral and digital future.

  • Fostering investment and innovation in people, technologies and processes.

  • Rebuilding trust in global trade.

Shining light on Spain’s solar energy

Spain is leading the way in solar power across Europe, with more utility-scale capacity installed and in development than any other EU country. Building on this foundation, Cisco signed a 15-year agreement in 2024 with Spanish renewable energy provider IGNIS to purchase 60,000 MWh of solar energy annually. The agreement supports the construction of a new solar plant in Aragón and is expected to supply enough energy to match 100% of Cisco’s electricity needs in Europe while adding 20,000 MWh to the national grid. This partnership supports Cisco’s net-zero ambitions, drives local job creation and reinforces Spain’s clean energy and digital transformation efforts. Learn more on Invested in Europe
